Philip Van Doren Stern (1900–1984) was one of the most influential Civil War historians of the 20th century. His more than 40 works include The Life and Writings of Abraham LincolnThe Secret Service of Confederate States in Europe, and "The Greatest Gift," a short story that inspired the iconic 1946 film It's A Wonderful Life.
