For over fifteen years, he directed the Stanford Alpine Archaeology Project, and his research has been sponsored by the National Geographic Society's Expedition Council. He is also a National Lecturer for the Archaeological Institute of America and on a national committee of that organization as well as an elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
